Hello my fellow Bookworms and page turners,
I know, I know, this is another fantasy novel, but look its what I enjoy! I will try and make the next one something a little more varied, after all you need a varied diet in order to stay fit and healthy, and after the amount of cakes and junk I had this Christmas, fit and healthy is certainly what I need to work towards!
Now I was reccomended this one by a friend, and I have to say their description of this one is spot on. “It’s sort of like The Godfather, but with swords and magic, and they all have strange descriptive gangster names, like Pretty Paulie, and Dimpley Dave” all in all they were not too far wrong!
The city of Ellinburg and its streets are the setting for “Priest of Bones“. Although, we don’t get to see alot of the city, as the story predominantly takes place in only a couple of the quarters. However, Mclean does a brilliant job of describing the areas we do see and shows the class divide between the rich and the poor. This gives the city alot of depth and allows it to comes to life in a Gotham-like fashion.
The story itself doesnt have a particularly intricate plot, but its dark and gritty, and envelops you, making you feel like you are part of the story. The story, in this case its about a magical criminal enterprise. You’re among the players, carving yourself up a piece of the city, which you hope to extort, manipulate and control along with your peers. In fact, it does this so well you forget it all isn’t real and you become very invested in the story. I myself, really got into the parts where they retook territory that was taken from them, you cant help but find yourself willing and wanting to help the crew build their empire.
In short this was a really good dark fantasy novel, and if you like a good fantasy crime story this certainly is a story for you! Dont just take my work for it though, grab a copy and read it for yourself!
In the meantime I will be over here purchasing book two “Priest of lies”!
Until next time, read more books!
