Angel in training is Coffey’s debut novel and first in a line of planned stories in a book series called Louisiangel.

The story is told from a point of view of a twenty year old college student, who is murdered while celebrating Mardis gras, this young woman is of course, our angel in training. Before her untimely demise she is approached by an arch angel and offered a proposition. She can either go to heaven or she can earn her wings and become an angel ,which as you can guess from the title is the option she chooses. In earning her wings she is entrusted with the protection of a trainee detective called Joshua. Joshua is currently looking into a string of murders which are believed to be the work of a serial killer. A serial killer who is believed to be responsible for the murder of our main protagonist. The story follows the pair as they solve the case, and find their feet in there aspiring roles. I won’t tell you anymore, as it would ruin the story for those who wish to read it.

One of the main reasons I enjoyed reading this novel, is that it has a good storyline. However a good storyline can only get you so far, the very world is created with the writers skill, being able to get a reader to sympathize & connect with a character and their journey is no easy feat. Cheryl manages to do this through her writing, she made me invest in the characters.

The most interesting Characters by far where Angel and Joshua, their connection somewhat steamy in parts makes for an interesting read especially considering the role each character has to play within the storyline. Coffey has a really smooth and easy to read narrative style and the pace kept me interested to the end, I could barely put the book down for the last few chapters, and her love for  the New Orleans setting that the book takes place in clearly comes through in her prose.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait for to read the rest of the series – bring on book 2!

Until next time, read more books!
