Hello my fellow bookworms and page turners, today’s post is about a fantastic short story called Final Protocol, by J. C Daniels. I was lucky enough to get a preview copy of this book from the lovely Author herself when I interviewed her last week, which was not only an amazing treat! but a great shock as this is my first ever book that I have been given by any Author so thank you very much!! I can only apologise I have not had chance to review it sooner as I’ve been a little more busy than usual this week. But that’s enough of that sentimental mush (I’m actually going a bit red) let’s get on with it!

Final Protocol is a standalone sci-fi romance, the story may be short, but wow it really packs a wallup! Silence our protagonist is for all intents and purposes is a slave but she is also an Assassin, forced to do heinous jobs and crimes against her will by her owner who is well, horrible really. He is sadistic and cruel and loves to make sure she knows that he is in charge. This is how Silence has lived for the past 10 years, in pain and looking forward to the moment that she will eventually die.

Her life prior to her captivity by this.. person, is somewhat a blur however she does remember how she came to be in this situation,  A man she knows she once loved, betrayed her and bargained her away to a madman to pay a debt that wasn’t hers.

Now if you have been reading any of my reviews thus far, you will know I like the darkness in literature, and this is very dark in places so it definitely ticked all my boxes, I also have a soft spot for strong female lead characters, and well, this is very much a character driven story and it is Silence’s character that does the driving. From the start I liked her. In spite of the things that were done to her she remained strong. As you may have guessed from my description of her situation, most of that strength is aimed at killing her owner, and to track down the man that betrayed her.

Now I don’t want to give away much more than that, as the book is very short but it is a thoroughly enjoyable read, although not for the faint of heart or those who are somewhat prudish, there were a few bit of this where I had to undo my collar, and it wasn’t due to the heat wave we have been having recently.

So overall, as a Story it hit all my buttons, it was intriguing, fast paced, dark, gritty and slightly erotic. I enjoyed the story. I know it’s a standalone however if there was a second issue that told us where silence goes from the  conclusion of this book, I would definitely pick it up and read it!.

Until next time, read more books!
