Hello my fellow wordsmiths and page turners,
Today we are looking at my top 5 opening lines in literature. As you can imagine it’s something that every writer wants to get right, as they want to grip the reader from the get go all while conveying the tone in which the book is written. I feel that my top 5 personify the upper echelons of the perfect first line.
5, Capture The Castle

“I write this sitting in the kitchen sink.”
4, Matilda

“It’s a funny thing about mothers and fathers. Even when their own child is the most disgusting little blister you could ever imagine, they still think that he or she is wonderful.”
3, The Princess Bride

“This is my favorite book in all the world, though I have never read it.”
2, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

“Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.”
1, The Martian

“I’m pretty much f**ked.”
What are your favourite opening lines? do you disagree with any of mine? please let me know in the comments below 🙂
