Hello my fellow bookworms and page turners. I hope you are enjoying my Crime week! this post we are going to be looking at The Silkworm, which is book two of the Cormoran Strike series written be the critically acclaimed author J.K Rowling.
This book like the first follows the exploits of the PI Cormoran Strike. Cormoran finds himself being hired this time by Leonora Quine to find her missing husband Owen. Owen the focus of Strikes search is a Author with somewhat of a flighty persona, he has been known to disappear from time to time, but this time it’s different. Strike finds a book in which Owen has written several poisonous pen-portraits in fact he has written one about nearly everyone he knows. If the novel was ever to be published, it would ruin most definitely ruin lives, motive aplenty, Strike must wade through the sea of scandal in order to solve Owens mysterious disappearance.
My Thoughts on The Silkworm are similar to those I had when I read the first instalment of the strike series, The Cuckoo’s Calling, the story started out very slow paced, particularly at the beginning of the investigation given the sheer amount of descriptive pose to set the scene and layout, for a time there was a lot of information being thrown at me, but once the pace began to pick up I started to be able to connect the dots between this abundance of information which at times seemed to be purely co-incidental and often random at times. Once I started to connect the dots, i started to attempt to make predictions, I usually pride myself on figuring things out pretty quickly, which is really my downfall in most aspect of media related enjoyment. but much to my enjoyment I found myself to be wrong several times, which made this story as have a few others rank themselves above my usual mundane rating for whodunit novels. Sure enough not far into the book i was pretty hooked on the story.
That being said the story wasn’t without its niggling problems the biggest of which for me was the heavy handed handling and portrayal of Robin and Matthews relationship. It was tedious, frustrating and went on far too long, even from the first novel I could tell that their relationship wouldn’t last due to Matthews ineptitude to support Robin in her endeavours to become an investigator. That and the unrealistic notion that supermodels and women of such a calibre would sleep with the damaged, gnarled and especially in regards to the first book washed up detective incredibly laughable. But maybe that is my own shallowness showing through, I am not sure.
So overall! i enjoyed the second instalment even more then i enjoyed the first, I really like the characters and their relationship and the dialogue, in particularly that between Strike and Robin. Would I recommend this? Yes, i think that J.K Rowling is a great Author, there are still some kinks in her work, but there is an anyone’s, she has proved herself to be an avid purveyor of both YA and adult fiction, and I look forward to the third instalment of the series which if believe is due to be released later this year.
